Cultivating Connections: Buddy Reading and Tuakana-Teina at Kaihere School
At Kaihere School, we are committed to enriching our students' learning experiences by integrating the Maori values of tuakana-teina through our Buddy Reading program.
The tuakana-teina relationship is a cornerstone of Maori culture and signifies a unique bond between an older sibling or peer (tuakana) and a younger sibling or peer (teina). This relationship is built on mentorship, guidance, and support, all of which are beautifully encapsulated in our Buddy Reading program. By pairing older students with younger ones, we encourage them to connect and learn from one another, while also fostering a sense of belonging within our school community.
As the principal of Kaihere School, I have had the privilege of seeing our older students, stepping into the role of tuakana, and take great pride in sharing their love for reading and helping their younger peers, the teina, learning to read and enjoy literature. This not only enhances their leadership and communication skills but also allows them to experience the satisfaction of being experts in their own right.
Meanwhile, our younger students flourish under the guidance and encouragement of their older peers, gaining confidence and improving their reading abilities. The connections forged through the Buddy Reading program have created an atmosphere where every student feels valued, encouraged, and supported in their learning journey.
By incorporating the tuakana-teina relationship into our educational approach, we at Kaihere School are honoring New Zealand's rich cultural heritage and demonstrating our commitment to fostering a nurturing and inclusive learning environment for all of our students.
