Ngarua Class Creates a Symbolic Waka Mural

Richard ReidMarch 30, 2023

Ngarua class students have delved into the history of early Maori journeys to Aotearoa and the symbolism of the waka, culminating in the creation of a vibrant class treaty mural.

As part of their exploration of early Maori migrations to New Zealand and the significance of the waka on our school logo, Ngarua class students have embarked on an inspiring project. They've combined art and history to design a large waka mural that represents their unity and commitment to learning together.

The students began by crafting personalized avatars, carefully coloring them in to represent their individuality. Once completed, each avatar was attached to a giant cardboard waka, symbolizing the students' collective journey towards knowledge and understanding.

This collaborative project reflects the essence of their class treaty, showcasing the students' dedication to caring, sharing, living, and learning as a cohesive unit. The mural beautifully encapsulates the Maori proverb, "He waka eke noa," which translates to "We are all in this canoe together." This vibrant and meaningful artwork which has been put up on the wall, serves as a daily reminder of the unity and shared goals that define the Ngarua class community.
