INFO from the SENCO

Kristen Ferguson —

What is the Role of the SENCO?

The SENCo's role (Special Education Needs Coordinator) is to ensure that every child at Kaikorai, regardless of their unique learning needs, receives the support and resources they require to thrive. Kristen Ferguson is our SENCO, and her job is to identify students who may require additional assistance, whether it be due to learning difficulties, communication barriers, social or emotional challenges, or physical impairments.

Kristen's role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, including:

  • Collaborating with teachers, teacher aides, and other staff to develop Individual Education Plans (IEPs) tailored to each child's needs.
  • Monitoring and tracking the progress of children with special educational needs, ensuring they are making meaningful strides in their learning journey.
  • Providing guidance and support to our wonderful Teacher Aides who work closely with our SEN students.
  • Actively participating in school meetings and liaising with parents, external agencies, and specialists to ensure a holistic approach to support.
  • Overseeing the provision of high-quality teaching and interventions for SEN students, both in group settings and one-on-one sessions.

E kore e ngaro te tāngata, takahi ana he ara whakamua ~ "A person will never be lost, they are simply forging a new path forward." This whakataukī reminds us that every child learns in their own space and time, and the staff at Kaikorai ensures that each child's unique journey is honoured and supported.

If you have any questions or concerns or would like to discuss your child's specific needs, please don't hesitate to reach out to Kristen. You can contact her via email at kferguson@kaikorai.school.nz.
