Principal's news

Beth Downie —

Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa.

Firstly, thank you to our Kaikorai community who have made me feel so comfortable in my first 3 weeks as principal. The transition from being in the classroom to principal requires a lot of new learning. We always ask our children to be brave when they are learning new things, to accept that making mistakes is normal and it is okay to not know the answers immediately. I thank you for allowing me time to find answers, process new information and let me get back to you.

I am impressed by how easily our children have settled back into school. For many, the transition from one syndicate to the next can be a big jump in what is expected.  Beginning of the year assessment adds to the picture of your child's needs and where their learning is heading. We have 'parent interviews' in 2 weeks time, I really hope your children are part of this conversation about their learning. It is important they know their next learning steps and what they need to reach these. Please read this article on how to book a time.

I hope you have heard talk about the zones of regulation over the last few weeks. It is really valuable we all know what emotions we are feeling and how it feels when we are experiencing these emotions. We need to normalise all feelings and talking every night is a great way to begin.

It was really neat to see in the Otago Daily Times 100 years ago feature, the write up about our school arch unveiling. With the current building project, we are always looking forward to the future and it is through small reminders like this article that we remember where our school has come from and the history that surrounds us.

Again, thank you for your ongoing support and please do not hesitate to get in touch at any time should you need clarity or have any questions - I'll do my best to answer them quickly!

Ngā manaakitanga
