Dissection at OBHS Recount

While we walked down to Otago Boy’s High School (Yes, my dad’s school) the whistle of wind soared through the sunny sky beaming down on us. As we strolled, Moss had to show Mr Hartley the way because of his little knowledge of Dunedin.

We finally arrived and we met a lady named Mrs Casey who taught us her 3 rules in the OBHS laboratory (Biology class). They were: 3 before me, stay seated and if you get hurt tell a grown-up. As we wandered through the silent howl we found out that boys were taking exams. It felt like a ghost town even when I knew this school really well. We got to the laboratory and we needed a buddy. Mine was Harry Burrow and then we were seated.

We finally got our hearts! After all this time! I’m so excite…. Huh? That’s it? To me it looked very small and tiny, but even though it was small we were keen to get into it. We had to cut the hearts in front of us with scissors. One of us had to cut it open like a book, while the other had to slice and dice it like a sausage. For me, it was too hard to cut, so Harry had to cut both of them.

We saw all of these little stripes that looked like you could snap them (you probably could). We also saw all of these guitar strings that turned out to be veins and chutes that separate and push the blood. We saw a thick side with the left ventricle and left atrium, which looked muscular and a thin side with the right ventricle and the right atrium that looked useless. Next we got one massive sheep heart. Harry and I ended up putting our finger down the aorta. It felt all smooth and soft inside interestingly.

We got so interested in it that we didn't even know that our time was up. We said goodbye and thank you. We also gave a box of roses to thank Mrs Casey for giving up her time. I said goodbye to my Dad and we arrived back at school just in the nick of time for the end of school.
