INFO from the SENCO - Neurodiversity in our tamariki

Neurodiversity is a natural variation in the way children's brains work and develop.

It is important to remember that neurodiversity is not a disorder or pathology, but a natural variation in the way individuals learn, think and process information. Neurodiversity can involve a variety of conditions such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, and Tourette syndrome. It is important to recognize and celebrate neurodiversity in children, and to provide them with the right environment to reach their full potential. By understanding and respecting neurodiversity, we can create an inclusive learning environment which celebrates and nurtures a diverse range of skills, gifts, and talents.

Teachers and Teacher Aides play a pivotal role in supporting neurodiverse students. At Kaikorai, we strive to create an environment that is inclusive, supportive, and understanding. With the appropriate accommodations and modifications, teachers create an environment where all students can be successful. By understanding the unique needs of neurodiverse students, teachers can develop strategies that will reduce anxiety, increase self-advocacy, and foster collaboration. Furthermore, teachers can provide individualized instruction and incorporate effective teaching strategies to ensure that each student is learning at their own pace. With the right resources and support, teachers can help neurodiverse students reach their full potential.

Future newsletters will feature various aspects of neurodiversity - stay tuned!
