Middles News

It was wonderful to catch up with most of you during our recent parent interviews where we were able to share some information about your child and their learning goals.  As they work through these they will add evidence to show how they are going with achieving their goal.  If you were unable to attend for any reason, please don't hesitate to get in touch with your child's classroom teacher. 

Thank you to Mrs Kumar who organised a whole school trip to watch a performance by the NZ Air Force Band.  Children learned about some of the different instruments played by the people in the band and also got to listen to both familiar and new songs played in fun ways.  

We are still using the court and field areas for fitness and sports sessions when the weather allows.  While most children are showing independence in looking after their sunhat, we have a number of children who have misplaced theirs.  As we only have a small number of spare classroom hats, these often get used and left around the school.  School hats can be purchased at the school office. 

Next week, we'll begin our first big PBL (Project Based Learning) project for the year.  This will look at the untold story of early Māori migration to Aotearoa and the skills of the early navigators who carefully planned their voyage from Hawaiiki to Aotearoa.  You may have read about or seen some of the work by Sir Ian Taylor relating to this.  Teachers have been learning from experts to gain a greater understanding of all that was involved in this amazing journey.   

Classes in the middle syndicate will be exploring kāpehu whetū (star navigation), waka hourua, food preservation, and bird migration.  If you have any connections, knowledge, or skills that you feel would support our learning in these areas, we would love to hear from you.
