Chelsea Sugar Factory trip
Kamo High Hospitality and Enterprise students had a great visit to the Chelsea Sugar Factory on August 1st. It provided valuable insights into the sugar production process and an opportunity to have a fascinating journey into the heart of one of New Zealand's iconic industrial sites. Located on the shores of the Waitematā Harbour in Birkenhead, Auckland, this historic factory has been producing sugar since 1884. The tour offered a unique opportunity to see how raw sugar is transformed into various essential products in both home cooking and commercial food production.
The tour began with a visit to the Raw Sugar Store, where we saw massive mounds of raw sugar imported from countries like Australia and Fiji being unloaded from the ships.
Next, we move on to the refinery, where the raw sugar is washed, filtered, and purified. This part of the tour was especially interesting because we observed the different stages of refining, including the removal of molasses and impurities. The sugar is then crystallized into the white granules. We saw the different types of sugar being produced, from standard white sugar to golden syrup, brown sugar, and icing sugar.
The tour included interactive displays that explain the science behind sugar production, such as how the size and shape of sugar crystals can be controlled. We also got a chance to taste some of the products at different stages of refinement. Plus each student had the chance to be part of a master baking class with yummy results.

The Chelsea Sugar Factory is committed to sustainable practices, and the tour included information on how the factory minimises its environmental impact. This involved insights into energy-efficient technologies, water recycling, and waste management systems.
At the end of the tour, we visited the on-site café, where some students enjoyed a sweet treat made with Chelsea sugar, or browsed the gift shop for souvenirs, including unique Chelsea-branded products.
The trip to the Chelsea Sugar Factory was not just an educational experience; it was also a journey into New Zealand's industrial and cultural history. Whether interested in the technical aspects of sugar production, the factory's rich heritage, or simply enjoying sweet treats, this tour had something for everyone.
