Advice for Students and Parents - First Phones

KHS Editor —

"Good Tings" - a collaborative initiative between 2degrees and Netsafe - has been launched as an engaging, interactive learning module accessible to children and caregivers either in school or at home.

This program serves as an introductory guide for families introducing a "first smartphone" into their household, covering everything from adjusting privacy settings to recognising potential online threats. It is designed to provide children with the skills and knowledge they need to navigate the digital world safely with their first phones.

Catherine Harris, 2degrees agency TBWA’s CEO said:

“We are delighted to see Good Tings, the First Phones programme move into schools permanently. Phone safety is such a critical issue for our young people. It’s so important that 2degrees and Netsafe are investing in empowering our tamariki with the information and tools they need. Phones can be powerful tools and we want our children to get the best out of them, while keeping them safer in the process.”

At the end of the micro-learn, learners will be able to:

  • Describe how to create a stronger password and why to use parental controls.
  • Explain what to do if they experience bullying or trolling online.
  • Recognise that online contacts may try to take advantage of them.
  • Ask for help and support from trusted sources when they need it.
