Te Hauhunga - Girls* on Ice Aotearoa

KHS Editor —

Inspiring passion, participation, and empowerment through science, art, and wilderness exploration.

Te Hauhunga—Girls* on Ice Aotearoa New Zealand offers 15 and 16 year-olds a fees-free experience to a New Zealand glacier. The 12-day expedition will combine glaciological science, art, outdoor exploration, and mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge). Established through Inspiring Girls Expeditions and hosted by Te Puna Patiotio—the Antarctic Research Centre at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, this programme supports female-identifying young people. Our country presents stunning scenery, diverse ecosystems, and endless opportunities for exploration. A team of approximately 10 students will learn about the ever-changing nature of glaciers through art and from both Western science and mātauranga Māori perspectives. Students will then use their new knowledge to design and conduct research projects in the glacial environment.

Our first expedition launches in 2024. Register online if you’d like to join an expedition, get involved, or learn more about this exciting new programme!
