Whangarei Compisite Rugby vs WBHS 1st XV

RUGBY

KHS Editor —

Last week our Whangarei Composite Rugby team took on Whangarei Boys High School 1st XV in their pool play game for the Mid Week 1st XV Competition which was a real nailbiter.

WBHS scored two tries early into the game utilising their extreme pace they have with their Fullback and Wing players which left our boys rather shellshocked! We then clawed our way back with a try to one of our Props, only to see them extend their lead with a further 2 tries.

Just before half time we managed to dot down again through yet another tough slog by our forwards with our other prop going over for a try which left us down at half time 24-12.

The 2nd half it was try for try as the game went on with the score getting closer and closer as the clock ticked over. Unfortunately there just wasn't enough time on the clock for us with the final score being 34-33 to WBHS when the whistle blew. This game was one which really proved it's a game of two halves! Our boys never gave up and gave it their all, right to the end and even though the score did not reflect a win to our team, our boys were not depleted. They were stoked that there was only 1 point in it, as were we!

This then meant we made the Semi Finals. Whangarei Boys High School were to play Kaitaia College in their semi however Kaitaia defaulted therefore seeing WBHS straight through to the final. We on the other hand had to travel up to Kerikeri to take on them at home in our Semi. With the game falling in the middle of exam week it meant a bit of shuffling around and having our game played at 6.00pm under lights which for some of our players was a new experience in itself.....It obviously didn't prove too much of an obstacle with our team coming away with the win 28-10!

Our scrum proved dominant doing some strong grunt work up front and then allowing our backs to utilise their speed with some dynamic finishing out wide. It was a real display of some great team work! Kerikeri High definitely did not make it easy for us though, there was a great display of rugby out there by both teams. We would like to thank Kerikeri High for being accommodating in playing the later game.

Next week now sees us come up against WBHS again in the Final. We wish our boys the best of luck for this game and hope to see many of you on the side line to support! Stay tuned to our Kamo High School Sports Facebook page to get the update on the day and time of the final which is yet to be confirmed.
