Skills4Work - bringing training to you!

KHS Editor —

We are reaching out to share an exciting opportunity available to Te Tai Tokerau iwi, whānau, Marae, schools and wider community. We would appreciate it if you could please forward this email to all of your contacts who may be interested in engaging with our organisation to empower whānau and youth through education, training and employment.

Our Organisation:

  • Skills4Work is a Private Training Establishment that specialises in training Butchers and Bakers.
  • We target students seeking alternative pathways for employment-focused education and training (e.g. apprenticeships).
  • We are the only organisation in New Zealand accredited to train butchers.
  • We train all apprentice butchers and bakers who work in PAK’nSAVE, New World, Four Square and Fresh Foods in both the North and South Island of New Zealand.
  • We have training centres in Auckland (Manukau) and Christchurch, but we train students and apprentices all over the country.
  • We currently manage 630 Butchery and Bakery apprentices across New Zealand.

The Facts:

  • The Meat Industry Association estimates a daily shortage of 2000 meat workers.
  • The meat industry is operating at only 70% of its capacity and demand levels.
  • The national average salary for a Butcher is $23 in New Zealand. Salaries may range from $18 - $31 per hour depending on skill level, experience, and qualifications.
  • There is an ongoing shortage of qualified bakers in New Zealand, and “Baker” appears on Immigration New Zealand's regional skill shortage list.
  • The national average salary for a Baker is $22 in New Zealand. Salaries may range from $18 - $28 per hour depending on skill level, experience, and qualifications.

The Opportunity:

  • We know that there are a number of barriers facing whānau in Regional New Zealand in terms of having access to training.
  • We would like to engage with your whānau about bringing our Butchery OR Bakery courses to you, your marae, community centre, church etc.
  • Your whānau may be able to access free training in our pre-trade Butchery and/or Bakery at no cost under “FEES FREE”.

The Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be a New Zealand Citizen or Resident.
  • Be at least 16 years old.
  • Have NCEA Level 2 or equivalent knowledge OR baking experience.
  • Must able to physically lift around 20 to 25kgs.

If you are interested in talking to us about this opportunity, please contact me directly on 022 5418 596 or 0800 275 455 or email m.lemarque@skills4work.org.nz and I will contact you!
