Serrving our Community - Science Masterclass

KHS Editor —

Our first ever ‘Science Masterclass’ took place in Week 8 of Term 4, 2022 at Kamo High School. Our group were all keen to have a go at using our Science Skills to create some hands on gifts.

For our ‘Serving Our Community’ project, we worked together to make up scented and coloured soaps and candles, using all natural ingredients (sourced from Candle Creations and the KHS Science Learning Area).

Mrs Poutai showed us how to make harakeke baskets, and some of our Year 10s helped by making the lovely puaka harakeke; while Ms Osborne and Mr GT supervised our soap and candle making over the first two days.

On the third and final day, we discussed and made a list of several groups in our community that we would like our completed gift baskets to go to, and took turns taking these ‘up town’ to each of our community recipients. It was a hugely rewarding experience for each and every one of us: the smiles and positive comments from those we met in our community were well worth it!
