Around the Grounds - Sports Update

KHS Editor —

Last week was an exciting week of sport beginning with our Senior Boys taking part in the NSSSA 3x3 Basketball Competition. We took along 2 teams who had big shoes to fill after the results our Junior Boys had the week before and they didn’t disappoint that’s for sure. One of our teams had some close wins and losses and our other team made it through to the semi undefeated and then taking the win for the semi final over Whangarei Boys High School in overtime! They then came up against a very competitive Kerikeri High School team in the final. This game was very evenly matched with each team going point for point on the scoreboard. Unfortunately, time was against us with Kerikeri slotting one right on the hooter to take the win by 1 point! The day was a great success all round.

We then had our Girls 1st XI Football Team playing their last pool play game last week and it was a top of the table clash with Otamatea High School. Otamatea came out strong and scored in the first 4 minutes putting us on the back foot. We rallied and put some lovely combinations together through our new recruit Hannah to Gemma and Rachel on the wings. This resulted in a beautiful goal from Rachel hitting the post and in to bring us 1-1 to finish the half.

The second half started with a good hustle from both sides and strong possession. Jordyn kept composure at the back and made some wonderful runs through the middle. Rachel and Elise used their solid kicks to clear from the back and give Jhaylar a rest in goal. Our forwards Maiya and Bailie hustled the whole game constantly pushing for goals and working hard up front. Keisha and Mollie worked tirelessly going end to end to support the cause. Our supper subs Natalie, Zoe and Sasha held their own and worked hard in their assigned position keeping Otamatea at bay. Our second goal came from a lovely floater over the goalies head from Mollie to put us ahead.

They counter attacked from their kickoff and put us under pressure quickly, but our defence kept them out. The next 15 minutes was spent in our attacking half putting them under pressure. They did amazing to keep us out until 3 minutes from the whistle when Mollie put another curling floater over the goalies head to take us to 3-1 up.

This week sees the start of the Football playoffs with our Girls team having a bye and our boys team now entering into crossovers with the Premier Division teams.

Friday night saw our Girls 1st XI Hockey team take out a great win against Springfield 7-2 and Saturday in atrocious weather conditions we had our Netball teams take the court and despite the weather, there was still some great games of Netball to be had with our A team unfortunately going down to a strong WGHS Senior A who had a polished defence. Player of the day was Jurney for her solid game and never ending energy, and Tū Kaha player was Lilly K for playing lots of positions and just getting on with it. Both Hockey and Netball take a break this weekend for Matariki and will be back again next week.

Friday saw a group of our female students attend a Skills and Drills session with some of the Black Ferns down at Pohe Island and it was also our School Cross Country and the weather gods certainly played their part in the day with the sun coming out in perfect time. It was great to see a good bulk of our students out there enjoying themselves.
