Summary of 20 September 2022 Board meeting

The new KNS Board met for the first time on 20 September. Nau mai haere mai (welcome) to new parent trustees Joe Benbow, Rosemary Mose, and Natalie Vaughan-Sanders, and to new staff trustee Phil McIntosh – and welcome back to parent trustees Simon Johnson and Blair Wightman.

The Board's first action was to elect Simon as Chair until February 2023 (the Board has to elect a new Chair at the first meeting of every year).

As part of their induction, the Board spent the first half of the meeting getting a high level overview of the work of a school Board. The Board’s role is governance rather than management — the Board guides and steers the waka; Conrad and the staff paddle the waka.

The Board's primary role is to set the school’s strategic direction with the three-year Charter, and to approve the Annual Plan for each of those three years. The Board also has to check progress against the goals in the Charter. The Board will be considering progress against a Charter goal at almost every meeting. At this meeting, the Board reviewed progress against Charter goals 2 (tāngata / people) and 3 (wāhi / place).

In the second half of the meeting, the Board noted the monthly update from Conrad (in which Conrad reports on many management items such as property planning, finance, health and safety, and so on).

The Board will meet at 6.30pm on Tuesday 18 October to continue with induction. The next meeting for Board business will be held at 6.30pm on Wednesday 16 November, in the staffroom. Board meetings are open to the public.
