(Re)introducing the final member of the KNS Board, Conrad Kelly (Principal)
I have been principal of Karori Normal School since March 2011. KNS is my third principal’s position, having previously been principal of Discovery School in Whitby and Korokoro School in Lower Hutt. I also spent four years as Primary Head Teacher at the British School of Kuwait in the 1990’s. My early teaching experience was in Wainuiomata and I’ve also taught in central London.
I am married to Tracey and we have three children. Tracey is the Deputy Principal of an intermediate school. Our children have all left school now, one is currently studying and two have joined the workforce.
A confirmed ‘sports-nut’ I have a real passion for rugby and cricket. I’ve spent many hours coaching and managing teams in both sports as well as being involved in sports administration. I’ve been the chair of our local rugby club committee, junior convener at our local cricket club and on the cricket committee at our boys’ secondary school. I am a huge believer in encouraging children to get involved in sport and cultural activities. Currently I’m a committee member of our local cricket club, with a focus on growing player numbers and developing pathways for all, not just the elite.
I’m a member of the Normal and Model Schools Association executive committee and have been a mentor in the Beginning Principals Programme for over 15 years. I enjoy both these roles, they provide me the opportunity to support the next generation of teachers and principals.
