Learn the secrets of writing great stories from an award-winning author
"Write Like an Author" is a school holiday program for young writers.

Held in a fun and supportive setting at Raroa Intermediate this camp will see children develop and write stories with help from award-winning author Maria Gill.

Maria is the award-winning author of over 60 books. She has won the New Zealand Book Awards for Children & Young Adults Non-Fiction, and the Margaret Mahy Best Book of the Year Award.

It will be held during the school holidays, from Tuesday, October 3, 2023 to Thursday, October 5, 2023.
There will be a three day camp for children aged 9 to 14 and a one day workshop for children aged 7 to 10.

Young writers will learn:
* How to come up with story ideas
* How to plan and outline a story
* How to come up with interesting, sympathetic characters
* The writing process, how to put it all down on paper

Plus they'll make new friends and have heaps of fun!

Young writers (or their parents) can register here:
http://www.writelikeanauthor.com/CampListing.asp?wc_id=384

The number of places on the camp is strictly limited so register early if your child is interested in attending the camp.

New fares coming 1 Sept, under 13s now qualify for free travel!

We have exciting news! Metlink is introducing new fares, with new concessions for children and young adults from 1 September 2023, bringing the ‘half price fares for all’ to an end. You can apply for this new concession from 26 August through the Snapper portal.

The new fares were part of the Government’s Budget 2023 announcement, to help alleviate financial burdens on families and make public transport more appealing across New Zealand.

What's Changed for Under 13 (5 to 12-year-olds)?

  • Children aged between 5 and 12 will be able to travel for free anytime on Metlink buses, trains and ferries*
  • Free fares for bus and trains are only available to children who have applied for the Under 13 Free Pass and have it loaded on their Green Snapper card. These free fares are NOT accessible to those paying by cash on buses and trains.
  • Although the fares are free, children are still required to tag on and tag off the bus using their Green Snapper card.
  • 5 to 12-year-olds with a Free Pass on their Green Snapper card cannot tag on other customers.
  • Free fares are available on ferry using all forms of payment including cash and EFTPOS

*Some exclusions apply (including Metlink on demand services and Te Hunga Whaikaha Total Mobility taxis) and concession discounts are based on the full adult fare with applicable discount during off-peak hours.

Applying for the Free Pass

  • You can apply for your Free Pass on your Snapper card at Snapper.co.nz or by calling Metlink Contact Centre on 0800 801 700 from 26 August.
  • The pass expires 180 days from its first use - once it expires then the Green Snapper card defaults to the child fare. You will get a 7 day count down on the Snapper card readers (bus and train) to remind you the pass is expiring.
  • It is recommended you keep a balance on your Green Snapper card to avoid the card being blocked if a default fare is incurred due to failing to tag off at the end of your journey.

You can also find out the best fare for the rest of your family by using the Fare Selector Tool on the Metlink website.

Detailed information about the new fares and on how to apply for them can be found on Metlink and Snapper websites. Additional support and assistance is available on 0800 801 700.

Any of us who have had the experience of a sick child who needs hospital treatment, knows how traumatic that can be. And with 87,000 visits to the children’s hospital from tamariki across our region every year, they're counting on us for a brighter, healthier future.

Volunteer collectors are needed in Wellington City, Lower Hutt, Petone, Porirua and Kapiti.

If you can spare just 2 hours of your time to collect, please sign up to your preferred location at https://signup.com/go/WCHStreetAppeal

This is a great holiday opportunity to teach children about the importance of giving back and helping others. Younger children (16 years and younger) are welcome with an adult.

Maybe you know of an older student (Year 13 & beyond) who’d like to chalk up a few volunteer hours for their CV/Duke of Edinburgh Community Service?

Alternatively, your family might be aware of a community or corporate group in search of a meaningful volunteering opportunity.
