Jacqueline Wee —

This week we launched our campaign to ensure WCC keep their existing funding commitments in their LTP to FUND, FINISH & OPEN the KARORI EVENT CENTRE.

Just by way of reminder, WCC committed in September 2022 to spend $1.9 million to FUND, FINISH and OPEN the KEC. The Trust gifted the building to them in December 2022 based on that commitment. Indications are that WCC Officers will advise the cost to complete KEC is now in excess of $3 million and that the funding cannot be justified. We don’t agree with that estimate and believe that the KEC can be finished and opened for the currently budgeted $1.9 million. But unless Councillors take a different position to their officers, the current funding will most likely be cut from the LTP budget and the KEC will remain unfinished for at least the next four years.

History and promises matter.

We believe strongly that WCC must deliver on its past promises. We need to ensure that the current commitment of $1.9 million is NOT cut from the LTP budget and that WCC will FUND, FINISH and OPEN the KEC.

Our website provides more information about the history of the KEC and WCC commitments over many years to the development of this facility for Karori. If you want to know more, check out the FAQs here.

How can you help?

We have planned several actions to show community support for the project and create some public pressure on Council to keep the funding for KEC in the budget. Here are some ways you can support:

· Sign the Online Petition – We have started a petition asking WCC to keep the existing funding of $1.9m in the LTP budget. The petition is on-line here (with an option to sign a hard copy at Karori Community Centre and Marsden Books).

· Talk to your networks – given the length of time this project has been running it is not surprising that there are some who are not fully aware of the history of this project. We’ve attached some background information for your reference. Please talk about why you think a completed and open community hall is essential for Karori and the western suburbs.

· Write a letter - letters to Councillors, or to the editor, are another way to demonstrate community support for this project. Let WCC Councillors know why this project needs to be prioritised.

· Social Media – we will be posting and sharing on Facebook, and Instagram, to increase the community’s awareness of our campaign, and ask people to support through signing the petition. Follow our Facebook page to key up to date with our progress.
