New Zealand Laser Nationals

Hamish Carr —

Year 12 student Ben Tanner has been sailing a Laser radial for the past 4 years and attends a number of regattas each season. Most recently he attended the New Zealand Laser Nationals in Auckland. A large fleet of yachts with very accomplished sailors including current and past New Zealand representatives of sailing. Ben sailed well and was pleased with his performance, he finds the stronger winds more favourable for his sailing which he got for some of the regatta. Katikati College is very proud of Ben and his achievements.

The College also has a 420 sailing team for the second season with Ben Tanner, Liam Davison and Anouk Sayer making up the team, as there are 6 sailors per team we have partnered with Otumoetai College to make up the remainder of the team, Ben as team co-captain has set his sights on beating Tauranga Boys College the current holders of the Bay of Plenty Regatta Trophy. The School works closely with both the Katikati Boat Club and the Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club to offer teams racing for the experienced sailors, learn to sail both locally and through in Tauranga.

The summer has thrown up some challenging weather conditions, however the sailors have met the challenge and demonstrated a real determination to make the most of their opportunities on the water. The new season starts in Term 4, if you have a child interested in learning to sail or they are an accomplished sailor and would like to be part of the teams racing please get in touch with Hamish Carr via email.
