Six reasons why children should learn a musical instrument

Wendy Fleming —

  1. For the shy child, playing a musical instrument is self expression.

  2. For the awkward child, it’s co-ordination.

  3. For the impulsive child, it’s a way to channel energy into a rewarding accomplishment.

  4. For the easily distracted child, it’s concentration.

  5. For the uncertain child, it’s poise and confidence.

  6. For the child who gives up easily, it’s perseverance.

Through the Music Department a large number of itinerant Music teachers are dedicated to providing music expertise in their chosen field to the students of Katikati College. Lessons are provided through a combination of government funded free lessons and private providers.

For 2019 the free government sponsored lessons are for the following instruments: Guitar, Bass Guitar, Flute, Oboe, Bass Clarinet, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, Tuba, Steel Pan, Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass.

Your child can collect an application form from the student office if they are interested in learning one of these instruments. There is a one-off cost of $30 a year which helps cover repairs and maintenance on instruments, buying of resources and the tuning of the pianos. Please note that there is a waiting list for government funded guitar lessons as they are full.

For 2019 the private providers are Singing , Guitar (Sean Bodley) and Piano / Keyboard (Joyette Drost). If you are interested in learning from a private teacher, please contact the Music Department for details. There is also a one-off cost of $30 a year.

The school also has a number of instruments for hire at a cost of $70 for the year.  For 2019 we currently have  trombones, clarinets, bass clarinets, tenor saxophones, trumpets, violins and violas available.  Instruments can also be hired from Bay City Music or the Rock Shop in Tauranga. Both companies have excellent hire and hire to buy schemes.

Music lessons occur during school time and are approximately 30 minutes in length. With the change to a five day timetable lesson times will change each term so that each student does not miss the same class all year.

If you would like more information about the programme and contact details of the teachers themselves, please ask your child to collect a “Everything you need to know about learning a music instrument at Katikati College” brochure from the student office or email wfleming@katikaticollege.school.nz.
