Junior Technology

Hamish Carr —

Students in junior Technology classes are completing some amazing outcomes which they can be very proud of.

Wood Technology
In Wood Technology Year 9 and Year 10 students are making wooden boxes (waka huia) constructed from strips of wood. They designed their own box and wood combinations and added a feature to the lid. Some have been very bold and used the laser printer to create a design or image. Others have made the lid from strips as well.

Food Technology

7PRS are the first class to work through a new unit called fruit and vegetables. They are a wonderful class and have given all the recipes a good go. We have made fruit salads, courgette fritters (a favourite), vegetable noodles and most recently, saagwala. At the end of the term they will be bringing their workbooks home with all the recipes in the booklet. This is a perfect opportunity to try some of the recipes at home.

Year 10 food technology students are working to the theme of international cuisine and Year 9 students are working through a unit of work on pasta making. We hope students are coming home excited about learning and cooking. It would be great to think they are able and willing to support at mealtimes with the recipes and skills they are developing.

Resistant materials
Five classes are currently working through a leather craft unit. Students have learned skills including cutting, punching, stitching, and braiding of leather. We are about to start leather carving. The skills assessment project of a mystery braid has provided the challenge we were looking for and it is fantastic to see so many master the braiding.

Fabric Technology

Year 9 students are making a pair of shorts. They have a choice of fabric and pattern and are developing the skills needed to make more complex garments. Year 10 are making hoodies. It is great to see some students personalising the hoodie with design work.

Digital Technology

Students in Year 9 are currently working on a scratch assignment. This is a block-based coding language. They are learning to move sprites, create variables and solve problems while making games like "Pong" and "Catch the apples".

Year 10 digital technology students are completing a computational thinking assessment in which they create a text based game using Python coding language. The most popular been "Guess the number". The more advanced students are writing their own code, including functions, loops, debugging and edge cases.
