Waikato Band Festival

Wendy Fleming —

On Friday the 28th of August twenty three musicians from Katikati College attended the Waikato Band Festival held at Waikato University.

Giving their support and help on the day was Mr Wilson (ITM), Ms Martin (ITM), Mr Barlow (ITM) Geoff Dick (bus and bass player) and the wonderful Mr Bansgrove.

First on stage was the Jazz Band, playing Feeling Good, Birdland, Don’t Know Why and Nothing from Nothing. The band played incredibly well with solos from Stella Dobbs (Alto Sax), Kieren Jack (Trumpet), Ayako Tatsuta (Trumpet) and Samantha Wahlers (Vocals). To the delight of the group and shock of Mrs Fleming they brought home their first GOLD ability medal.

The Concert band were on next and to the groups delight Mr Harray arrived just in time to listen. They played Dance Party Mix, Highlights from Frozen, Hymn for Band and finished with How to Train a Dragon. They played extremely well and received a Silver Ability medal.

The trip on the way home included food at Burger King and the long waited Ice Cream Sundae for all members to celebrate the Concert Bands Silver Award at Rotorua Rhapsody in July. With such a high standard at both competitions its great that a country school like Katikati can compete along side bigger city schools and in some cases even beat them. Well done to all the musicians who competed that day, you did Katikati College proud.
