Thames Valley Secondary School Junior Volleyball Championships

Juliet Dunlop-Fraser —

The Year 9 & 10 Volleyball Champs for the Thames Valley schools was hosted by Katikati College on Wednesday 16th November.

With a record turnout of 9 girls’ teams and 8 boys’ teams, it was an A team tournament only. The 3 Katikati College courts buzzed non-stop all day with the teams playing round-robins and finals. The talking point was the performance of small schools like Mercury Bay Area School and Whangamata Area School who finished in the top 3 along with Katikati in both divisions. The Katikati girls' team looked classy and played to their potential, reaching the final and winning against Whangamata.  The boys team, who have trained hard for the tournament but do not play in a regular league, just missed out on the final by a few points but won the play-off against Waihi College in a hard fought match to take 3rd place by 1 point.
