Student Council report

Caitlin Thorburn and Jane Finnimore —

Wow, what a wonderful year it has been for the Student Council this year. We had around 40 active councillors involved in fundraising initiatives and policy decisions at the College. We also became a financial institution, raising close to $2000 this year!

This year was the start of the Student Council having funding behind it. Through having a weekly Friday barbecue, we on the Student Council have been able to generate enough funds to help get ideas into action. These awesome barbecues, as well as a mufti day, have helped us generate enough funds to be able to complete a number of achievements. These include:

  • funding three students' scholarships worth $80 each to be able to take the Wood Technology course this year;

  • funding the Level 2 Wood Technology class to build four outside picnic tables for the back field, to possibly be placed near the Tech block;

  • donating a koha to the Excel School of Performing Arts who came and performed at our school;

  • and donating money to go toward new drinking fountains around the school.

Best of all among the Student Council’s achievements has been an amazing social environment developed throughout the school, every Friday. Many students look forward to having their Friday sausage and being greeted with welcoming smiles.

The Student Council is made up of student representatives put forward by their classes at the start of the year. These students have made the Student Council a lovely and welcoming place and have had the ambition to make it a beneficial Council. I look forward to seeing this Council complete many more projects in the years to come and put more student suggestions into action to make the school an even more accommodating environment. It has been a pleasure to be a part of the Student Council this year.
