Kura Kai

Karyn Williams —

Katikati College is proud to be part of the Kura Kai initiative started by Makaia Carr in 2020. Kura Kai lives by the value of manaakitanga, (generosity and care for others).

Here at the College we were blessed to be donated a brand new chest freezer by a new member to our Katikati community, Megan Branks. Megan and other volunteers in our community cook meals that are then frozen down and brought to the school and placed into our freezer situated in the junior Food Technology room. The meals are then distributed out to those in our kura and local community in need. Because of the huge demand and need, meals have travelled as far as Paeroa, Waihi, Waihi Beach, Bowentown and of course our own community. Currently our year 10 Food Technology students have been learning and contributing to the Kura Kai efforts with the wonderful donated haul of ingredients dropped here at the school from both teaching staff and our wider community. It is great authentic learning for them. Our Food technology room is also gathering the start of an amazing pantry of goods which we have been distributing around to food gift stands in our local communities. The school will be holding a non uniform day soon to help this great cause. Please reach out if you know of families, elderly or people in need.
