Principal's Comment

Neil Harray —

Once again our Stage Challenge crew performed outstandingly well at their performance evening held on Thursday last week. It was an absolute credit to the staff and students involved who worked so hard to put together an outstanding performance. Our senior leaders especially have done an amazing job at leading this group with the help of a very supportive staff.  Judging by comments from members of the community who were able to attend the evening, I think everyone was absolutely blown away by the talent we have at our school and the level of professionalism that was displayed on the night.

Congratulations to Mrs Fleming and the Katikati Combined Concert Band who won Gold at the Matamata Festival last weekend. This is a fantastic achievement and excellent reward for all the hours of rehearsal everyone has put in. This achievement is particularly pleasing as this year Katikati College is unable to attend the Rotorua Rhapsody festival due to the large number of overseas schools participating.

One of the things we have done recently is to involve our students far more, especially in the senior school, in regards to ARC. Our values of aspiration, responsibility and citizenship have been with our school for a number of years now and we want our senior students to be more involved and to contribute more to this kaupapa. We are extremely conscious that ARC looks completely different in the senior school compared to the junior school. While our current seniors in Year 11, 12 and 13 have always had ARC during their time at Katikati College, the meaning can sometimes get a little lost. We are now working with our senior students to ensure that they contribute in a more significant way to the development of ARC and to continue the sense of ownership that they had when it was first implemented at Katikati College in 2012.

This time of year, as we head towards the end of term, is often when the ‘wheels fall off’ for some of our students.  Term two has been extremely busy and a number of our students have been involved in a wide range of activities. It is important, especially for our senior students, to maintain their focus on their academic studies and to ensure that they are not getting behind in any of their assessments. It is important that students talk and discuss any concerns they have with our teachers so that students can do their very best.

A reminder again about the Parent / Teacher meetings that are happening on Monday 26 June for Year 9 – 13’s. Online booking is still available by logging into: https://www.schoolinterviews.co.nz/ using code: hhnz3

Finally, I would be delighted if you are able to attend the student led assembly in the final week of this term on Wednesday 5th July in the Action Centre at 8:45am.

Nga mihi
