Year 7 Fabric Technology students are preparing for plastic free July by making Boomerang Bags in class

Robyn Cameron —

Every Year 7 student learns about plastic pollution in our environment and we discuss ways to reduce the plastic we use everyday. Boomerang bags are an ideal beginner sewing project as well as a way of spreading the message in our community.

The aim behind boomerang bags is to reduce materials going to landfill by turning them into re-useable bags which are available in shops and the library in Katikati. The bags are free to use and can be boomeranged back when no longer needed. All the bags are made from donated materials sewn by volunteers like our students.

Anyone is welcome to join our community sewing bees or to make their own Boomerang bag. The next dates are Thursday June 20 and July 4 from 3.30 - 5.30 p.m. or Saturday June 29 1.00 - 5.00 p.m.  in the Fabric Technology room (T5). Email rcameron@katikaticollege.school.nz for information.
