Disc Golf

Peter Besley —

Disc golf is a flying disc sport in which players throw a disc (‘frisbee’) at a target.

Discs are smaller and more streamlined that the traditional frisbee. Disc golfers use a range of discs from putters to drivers. There approximately fifty courses in New Zealand.

Students who took part in the Disc Golf Junior Project last year designed and built disc baskets and then played disc golf. The baskets were largely made from recycled materials and enough were made to set up a ‘pop-up’ course in the Vesey Stewart Reserve next to the College.
A number of organisations helped to get the project off the ground. The recycling centre at Te Maunga Transfer station collected piping, drums and bike parts and the local Lions club donated $200 to help purchase chain for the baskets. Kerry at Katikati Mowers and Cycles helped to break down some of the bike parts and Tharfield Nursary donated aluminium piping.
The Tauranga Disc Golf Association offered plenty of support for the project and provided a basket to model the basket design. Katikati is fortunate to have its own disc golf pro – Jimmy Tuitufu promotes RPM discs and is a sponsored player for the company. He came to Katikati College and shared his tips and knowledge, provided discs for the players and set the scene for an awesome afternoon playing disc golf.
Ex-Katikati College student Martin Conway won national disc golf titles in 2004 and 2006. There are plans to hold the Katikati Disc Golf Championships in Term 2.
