Graeme Vallely —

On Friday 19 May Katikati sent a Junior and Senior Futsal to the Bay of Plenty Secondary Schools Futsal Championship.

The Junior Team played some hard fought games in their group earning them a place in the semi-finals. This was a fast-paced game that saw Katikati score twice to defeat Rotorua Boys High 2-0 and clinch a spot in the final. A hard fought and even battle against Rotorua Intermediate finished 5-5 with the game to be decided by a penalty shootout. Katikati were calm and composed scoring 5 penalties to 4 to finish in 1st place. This was a great team effort by all players. Finn Niziolek put in an outstanding effort in all games and as a result was named MVP for the Juniors Tournament.

The Senior Team came into this tournament having finished runner up the previous 2 years.

Their group games were very evenly contested with Katikati defeating each team by small margins. Coming up against a much larger and very competitive Rotorua Boys High team, Katikati remained solid in defence and won the game 2-0. This win was unusual in the fact that both goals were scored by goalie, Shaun Coxhead. Trident High School had won their group games and semi-final with ease and came in to the final, quietly confident. Katikati put pressure on immediately and after some outstanding team play, Joe Niziolek put in 2 quick goals. The boys then went in to full defensive mode and held out Trident to win the game.

These were great wins for Katikati College - well done to both teams.
