Katikati College Equestrian

Peter Besley —

Katikati College was represented at the BOP Secondary Schools Championship and Thames Valley Secondary Schools Championship events over the last couple of weeks.

In show jumping a variety of classes and events can take place. A speed round requires riders to complete a series of jumps over set heights as quickly as possible. In an accumulation round each jump in the circuit is worth progressively more points; a refusal or a rail down would see the corresponding number of points deducted. A two phase round requires the riders to clear the first ten or so jumps and then complete four or five more jumps whilst being timed. In all events refusals and/or rails down will result in penalties (loss of points and/or time added). The Katikati College riders competed in heights ranging from 65 cm through to 1.05m.

The team at the BOP Championships held at Te Teko was: Samantha Besley, Karena Murray, Nicole Harvey and Ella Lecky. This is a very competitive event with some classes having over 50 riders. Samantha, Kerena and Nicole all finished with top ten placings and Ella was unlucky not to do the same.

Nine riders competed in teams at the Thames event. These were: Samantha Besley, Anton Turnwald, Katie Rousell, Malin Kruz, Ella Lecky, Katelyn Bateman, Karena Murray, Anica Raitek and Nicole Harvey. Jayne Donker travelled as photographer. There were top ten placings for riders in this event for Samantha, Karena, Katie, Katelyn, Ella and Malin, with the highlight being Malin winning one of her classes. Congratulations to Anica who had a great day competing in her first inter-school event.
