Quiz to celebrate Year of the Periodic Table

Anderley Middleton —

2019 is the year of the Periodic Table, it being 150 years since Mendeleev designed the modern Periodic Table of the Elements. We held a quiz for Years 7 and 8.

In Science for the six weeks leading up to our the quiz the students studied the Periodic Table’s history, how to read it and of course learnt off by heart the first 20 to 30 elements with the help of the Periodic Table song!

There were periods of high excitement from the 264 students when they knew the answers and then a quiet hum when they weren’t so sure! There were five rounds of questions and interspersed between rounds were fun activities which were run by the Year 13 Chemistry Students. Thanks to Lucy Gibson and Stella Hamilton-Wallace for reading out the questions, Margaret Sukkel for doing the Atomic Bingo, Ben Robertson for doing the true-false competition and Sasha Colbourn and Michael Gilliver for doing the Who am I and Which Element am I? The three winning teams out 66 entered were very close with the top team gaining 44 marks out of a possible 50. What a great effort!

The first three teams in the competitions all came from Mr Bache’s Science classes:

1st:  Em Francis (ST), Alex Capper (MU), Ruben Britton(MC) and Akira Cook (MU).

2nd: Maia Meredith (ST), Mackenzie Walter (MC), Kyra Murray (ST) and Liahona Osman (MC),

3rd: Poppy Carpenter (MC), Navraj Singh (ST), Matthew Graney (MU).

House Points: 1st = Stewart and Macmillan,  3rd Mulgan
