Rotorua Rhapsody

Wendy Fleming —

This year's Rhapsody Festival was held from 28th June - 1st July in Rotorua. The College entered three groups for adjudication.

The Senior Choir competed for the first time and learnt a lot from the adjudicator while achieving a Bronze Medal standard ranking. The amazing direction by Sophie Gibson saw this group perform three pieces with one a capella piece and two with accompaniment.

The Jazz Band played a number of pieces showcasing Kieren Jack on Trumpet, Bradley Guy-Taylor on Trombone and Samantha Wahlers on Vocals. Both Samantha Wahlers and Georgia Kelly have been invited to attend the NZ Jazz Summer School to be held in Wellington in January. The band maintained its high standard and received a Silver Medal ability ranking.

The Concert Band played a mixture of mainly fast music and did so at a high level - also achieving a Silver Medal ability ranking. The great news was that out of the NZ School Bands that competed we were second overall, beating much larger city schools, which is terrific recognition of just how good our musicians are.

We also had six students selected for the Honours groups (best of the best) who travelled over to Rotorua for three days before performing in the final concert. Georgia Kelly on Bass and Bradley Guy-Taylor on 2nd Trombone in the Jazz Band; Sophie Gibson in the Jazz Choir; Samantha Wahlers in the Choir; Natalie Schubert on 2nd Oboe and Billie Fleming on 2nd French Horn in the Concert Band.

Thank you to all who were involved.  It was, as always, an awesome experience.
