Bay of Plenty Junior Volleyball Champs

Juliet Dunlop-Fraser —

The Junior Girls’ Volleyball Team has been involved in the BOP Championships over the past 3 weekends. This tournament is always very competitive and this year was no different.

Based on last year’s result at the same tournament our team was ranked 15th overall. The team won their first game in 2 sets against Bethlehem C but went down narrowly in the other two pool matches. Both games were matches the team was good enough to win but sadly wasn't able to put things together on the court. In the second round of pool matches, the girls beat Mount Maunganui College B in 2 sets but again narrowly went down to Tauranga Girls College C in 3 sets. By now the team had started to gel together and were increasing in confidence. This had a fantastic effect on our results and led the way to three more victories over Otumoetai E and both the Trident B and C teams. Sadly, the girls lost an important game to a team they had previously beaten, in Mount Maunganui College B.

On the final weekend of competition, the girls played previously unbeaten Tauranga Girls’ College B and won in two sets to top their second pool. The first game of the finals was won by default which took them into the last day of competition where they won their first game against Trident B but lost by one point in the 3rd set against Tauranga Girls’ College B.

The final result was that the girls' team ended up in 20th place, however many girls gained valuable experience heading into the remainder of the year and the overall skill set of the team has improved dramatically which is extremely pleasing.

Well done girls!
