Senior students privileged to see takahē up close

Mahala Meredith —

Our Year 12 Biology students had the pleasure of visiting the beautiful Maungatautari reserve at the end of Term Two.

The Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari is a world-class conservation project which aims to continue species re-introductions and breeding programmes to create biodiversity in a sound ecological environment. It was a real privilege for students to see takahē up close. There are only about 400 takahē birds in existence and conservation work like that at Maugatautari is helping those numbers to rise every year. The takahē was long thought to be extinct and was first sighted again in 1948 after not having been seen for 50 years.
