Senior Sports Prizegiving
We recently held our Senior Sports Prizegiving to acknowledge the 1st teams in all codes and award the members with certificates of achievement, to present the College Champions their trophies in the school-wide sports and to acknowledge the regional and national representatives.
The night was opened by Principal Neil Harray who spoke of the pride
that the school and community took in our sporting success and how we
more often than not ‘punched above our weight’ in terms of our size and
location in our sporting achievements. This sentiment was
well-received by the attentive audience. Steve Graveson then took the
stage to present this year’s NZ Representative Inductees to our "Wall of
Fame".
The guest speaker this year was Mark Grayling, former pupil of Katikati College and current New Zealand coach of the Olympic Wrestling Team. His very amusing speech was well received as he spoke of his time growing up in Katikati, getting beaten at everything by his older brother Claude and his discovery of wrestling. He talked about his travels as a wrestler and also his experiences at Commonwealth Games, World Championships and the Rio Olympics after he transitioned into coaching. The main point he got across was to love life and live it to the full, grab every opportunity as you never know what you can achieve.
(A full list of results can be found on Katikati College Moodle under the Sports tab, along with the photos from the night.)
