Industrious times in the workshops

Hamish Carr —

Term two sees practical work really ramping up in the Technology Faculty workshops.

The CNC router is getting a lot of use. We know have some senior students who can operate the system very well. It was put to good use in producing some sets for the up-coming Year 13 Drama production. It was great to have students from Drama in the workshop putting the parts together.

Year 9 Engineering has had a number of minor projects on the go while work on their LED displays has been in progress. These include chopping boards, sweet dispensers and more recently a small box or two. Zac and Alex have impressed their classmates and teacher with the research, design and production of cast jewellery. They have made rings and pendants.

The Year 12 carpentry students are close to completing their paddles and I hope to see some take advantage of the opportunity to embellish the blade using the CNC or other techniques. Some of our Year 12 carpentry students recently attended the BICTO Big Day Out and experienced the building and carpentry industry first hand with a number of site visits. Some of the Year 12 Engineering students are working on individual projects. A number are electric powered and some are very ambitious. It is pleasing to see a core of students taking advantage of working lunchtimes, after school and on weekends.

Our Year 7 and 8 students are about to start their own design steel sign projects and I hope to have some images of their work in the next newsletter.
