Head Students' update

Roelien Du Plessis, Head Girl —

As a leadership team we set goals for ourselves at the start of the year and have been working hard to achieve them.

We wanted the school to be more involved with the community and the senior students of the school to be more involved with the younger students. Achieving this means that we can build stronger relationships with the community and help the school create a positive environment.

In Term One we got the lovely Year 7 & 8 students to make Easter cards which Cam and I delivered to the residents at Summerset Retirement Village. This was an amazing opportunity as we got to the chance to chat with some of the residents. As a result of that experience, we are now in the process of setting up a Summerset support group, which will be focused on organising activities and performances to be held at the Village.

Cam and Hamish decided to “Shave for a Cure” in honour of Hamish’s mum who sadly passed away due to cancer two years ago. At the start both boys set the goal of raising $2,000, however our principal, Mrs Pentecost, challenged them by saying that if they raised $6,000 she would shave her hair as well! This set the stage for the whole school and community to get involved and we were not disappointed. We ended up raising over $10,000 and the Shave Day brought the whole school together, packed into the Action Centre supporting all those who decided to shave their heads.

A goal for Alison and Jake was to have a whole week dedicated to Anti-Bullying, resulting in the creation of Warm and Fuzzy Week. The week was filled with fun activities, including a colouring-in competition, writing competitions, and a Pink Shirt mufti day to raise money towards anti bullying. The week was a huge success with students having fun and being more aware of the ways that their actions and words affect others.

For our goal, Cam and I wanted to bring the senior students and junior students together, so we created Manaakitanga Time. We got all the senior leaders together and went into the Year 7 and 8 classes doing activities with them during form time. Our goal is to have Manaakitanga time every two weeks so we will be working on this during Term Two.

As a leadership group, we feel as though we have had a very successful year so far and we look forward to achieving more of our goals by making the school a better place for everyone.
