E Pro 8 Engineering Competition

Hamish Carr —

Katikati College has again hosted a round of the hotly contested E Pro 8 Engineering Challenge. With 10,000 students involved across the country, the event is growing in popularity every year.

This year we had four teams at the event that was held on June 6.  All did well with two teams going onto the semi finals round to be held on June 27.

The event involves teams of four students using their knowledge of structures, electronic circuits, strategy and teamwork to solve four challenges. Each challenge has a theme and tasks worth points when completed correctly. The competition runs over two hours and the audience and teams are kept up-to-date with the scoring via a TV feed.

After two hours of competition and the lead moving between teams, “The First Order” team of Bradley Scott, Miles Jonson, Liam Kean and Tim Wiebes narrowly beat out second place getters "Katikati Brainyacks"  Hannah Gourlay, Kara McCormick, Jacob Doidge and Leo Willacy. Just 20 points separated the two teams.

There was also a solid showing from “The Sky Serpents” Murdoch Cameron, Akira Cook, Layla Hoskin and EM Francis, as well as the “Pink Power Chicks” Eugene Pfennig, Ben Tanner, Jack Harray and Hamish Tanner.

Many thanks to all the parents for their support before and during the event and to the College PE faculty for providing the venue.

Katikati College is proud to host both the intermediate aged and primary aged events. Next year the BOP region will also host a Year 9 and 10 competition. We are still looking for an event sponsor and would love to hear from any businesses in the Katikati community who feel they could help as an event sponsor ($750) or even a team sponsor ($120). Please contact Hamish Carr at Katikati College if you can assist or would like to know more.
