Prime Minister writes to Year 9 students

Patrick McMahon —

Last term Year 9 English students were engaged in a social justice task of their choosing. Two students (who want to remain nameless) from 9CHG decided to focus on an issue that was important to them, New Zealand's voting age.

After much research and discussion, they decided to write to the Prime Minister's Office to put forward their ideas on why the voting age should be lowered to 16 years old. This term Katikati College received a letter back from the Prime Minister herself! While she did take on the feedback that the students provided, she has decided to keep the voting age at 18. The students should be proud of their efforts and commended on their growth mindsets which aim to make New Zealand's future brighter and more equitable! Tau ke girls!
