UN Youth New Zealand Pacific Leadership Tour

Hilary Johnson —

This is an amazing international opportunity for a senior student.

This is the tenth year that UN Youth has run the Pacific Leadership Tour. The Pacific Leadership Tour delegation consists of ten senior high school students from around Aotearoa, all selected for their leadership potential and likelihood of employing skills acquired on the tour back into their school and community.

The delegation will first attend UN Youth Australia’s National Conference in Sydney. National Conference is Australia’s largest annual youth conference and is consistently recognised by the Australian government as a premier conference to discuss global issues and engage with possible solutions. This year’s conference is built around the theme ‘Environmental Justice’, which is timely considering last year's widespread School Strikes for Climate. The delegation will then travel to Vanuatu for the second leg of the tour, a cultural learning experience. The delegates will then have the opportunity to apply what they learned at National Conference in a real-life context - what the impacts of climate change look like and the need for environmental justice. They will personally interact with ni-Vanuatu locals and visit non-governmental organisations, all the while learning about intercultural competency. They will also visit the New Zealand High Commission to understand our role in the Pacific region’s development.
