Juliet Dunlop —

Lots of exciting news from our Squash Teams.

The Katikati College Boys Team of Glenn Templeton, Owen Whalley and Dan Astwood competed in the BOP Boys 1st Division Teams Squash Champs in Tauranga last term making the 3rd/4th play-off and finishing 3rd for a bronze medal.

The Katikati College Girls Team of Ashleigh Templeton, Katie Templeton and Ceil Butler competed in the BOP Girls 1st Division Teams Squash Champs in Te Puke also doing well and finishing with a bronze medal.

Glenn and Katie also played in the North Island Age Group Championships in the holidays and were very successful – Glenn finished 3rd in the U17 Boys and Katie finished 3rd in the U15 Girls. A great result as they are both among the youngest in their divisions.

Following on from this we sent two teams to the NZSS National Squash Championships in Palmerston North on the weekend of 4th-6th August. This is the first time we have sent a girls team in some years so it was very exciting to have 11 players travelling to represent the school. As expected in a national championship, the competition was exceedingly fierce with schools from all over the country battling it out with students ranging from beginners up to New Zealand reps.

Girls Results

  • KKC 3-1 Taupo Nui a Tia
  • KKC 0-5 Napier High School
  • KKC 0-5 Westlake Girls
  • KKC 1-4 Palmerston Nth Girls B

Final ranking 15 from 19 teams.

Boys Results

  • KKC 4-1 Marlborough boys
  • KKC 0-5 Auckland Grammar
  • KKC 1-4 Pukekohe High School
  • KKC 4-1 Wairarapa College
  • KKC 2-3 Tawa College

Final ranking 14 from 32 teams,

On the strength of their performances, Katie Templeton was selected to play in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Junior Girls team and Glenn Templeton was selected as a reserve for the NZSS Senior Boys Team. Both are among the youngest to be selected so congratulations to them both.

The Year 7 & 8 Squash team of Olivia Astwood, Meghann Fraser, Ariana Bluegum, Tiana-Lee Thomas-Snow, Depp Bolingford, Soi Lamelangi and Kairone Redden attended the BOP Zone Squash Champs held at Geyser City in Rotorua. Both Olivia and Depp had a strong day of competing both finishing with a Silver medal after tough finals. The other students were having their first go at competing in a squash tournament and had a really good day, learning to score and referee as well as play other ungraded squash players.

Well done to our squash players.
