National Kura Kai Week at Katikati College

Sandy Kindley - June 27, 2022

Last week was National Kura Kai Week and Katikati College took up the opportunity to show our manaakitanga in our rangatahi and show the value of ‘Caring for our Community”.

On Wednesday 22 June, senior Hospitality classes worked with Year 9 volunteers to cook up meals for others. This meant peeling, slicing and dicing vegetables, cooking up pots of pasta for lasagnes, curried sausages and pan fried vegetable mix to name a few gastronomical delights. This group worked all day to fill the freezers ready for distribution to those in need in our kura.

OUR PRINCIPLES

Our Kura Kai logo reflects how much manaakitanga means to us as an organisation. We believe in the power of kindness and generosity and also know the importance of showing respect and maintaining mana. We seek to empower rangatahi through the choice of helping others.

Ms Karyn Williams has also been working with the community on weekends and we would like to acknowledge her kindness and generosity. “We are leading New Zealand with this community led approach and the key has been encouraging our youth to get involved and show manaakitanga, a MARK value of our school.”

We are now hoping that Year 9s will be empowered to now give time on the weekend to continue to help others.

We would also like to say a big thank you to the community for donating food for this cause.
