Matariki Celebrations

Our school Matariki Po Tuku Taonga allows our students and whānau (family) to celebrate and share our culture with one another. Students who have been nominated by teachers and selected by the Matariki Committee are awarded prizes based on the Matariki Stars. It is such an amazing experience and one of the highlights of the year for our students to be a part of.  This year we celebrate from Te Rereatukahia Marae. In 2025 we will return to Katikati College to host our annual event.

Our taonga (awards) that were presented are;

  • Waitī. The recipient of the Waiti star award goes to the most outstanding Teina (junior) working consistently for our whanau. 2024 Winner is Chrome Hobson-Desmond.

  • Waitā. The recipient of the Waita star award goes to the most outstanding Tuakana (senior) working consistently for our whanau. 2024 Winners are Hannah Gourlay and Lyla Hudson.

  • Tupua-ā-nuku. The recipient of this star award has made the most growth within the school whānau unit this year. 2024 Winner is Jack Douglas-Hunt.

  • Tupua-ā-rangi. The recipient of this star award is renowned for Māori performing Arts.  2024 Winners are Tia-Maraea Brown and Hannah Gourlay.

  • Waipuna-ā-rangi. The recipient of this star award always shows manaakitanga (care and good well-being to others).  2024 Winners are Xavier Tuilaepa and Mercedez Nathan.

  • Ururangi. The recipient of this star award has shown that a positive attitude is key.

    2024 Winner is Shane Benedict.

  • Pōhutukawa. The recipient of this star is the star connected to those that have passed on but on this occasion this whetū is dedicated to students who have overcome adversity. 2024 Winner is Mana Thomas-Snow.

  • Hiwa-i-te-rangi - The recipient of this Whakaihu Award goes to a student that has aspirations to head to higher achievement. 2024 Winner is Aroha Kent.

  • Tautoru - The recipient is a Whānau Pūmanawa member who is committed and dedicated to Whānau, who steps up to elad and support tikanga and kaupapa Māori. 2024 Winner is Tumatatenga Utikere.

  • Matariki - The recipient of this award has shown leadership and outstanding commitment to the Whanau. 2024 Winner is Tia-Maraea Brown.
