Mates and Dates programme

Sandy Kindley —

As part of Year 10 Health we will be completing the Mates & Dates programme this year.

The Mates & Dates programme teaches young people healthy relationship skills and behaviours, to help prevent dating violence. The programme content focuses on the social and emotional aspects of having relationships. It is relevant to all students, whether or not they are dating, because the skills taught can be used in all relationships from friendships to family/whanau. Mates & Dates teaches young people how to have relationships based on respect, negotiation and consent.

The Year 10 programme includes the following description and learning outcomes:

"Throigh class discussions and a film resource, students will be introduced to the programme. Students will identify effective communication and be introduced to the Mates and Dates consent poster. They will be able to: understand the concept of consent, value communications as key to consent and demonstrate ways to communicate effectively with others.

The course involves five one hour sessions which are taken by trained experienced facilitators.

If you have any questions about this course please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely,

Sandy Kindley
