Brecon takes national title for design innovation

Hamish Carr —

This year Katikati College had one entry in the New Zealand National Secondary Schools Minibike Racing Grand Prix.

The event was held in the first week of Term 3 at the famous Chris Amon Circuit (Manfeild) in Feilding. Brecon Cameron entered 2 bikes; a 50cc mini bike and a 70cc Motard. While the 50cc proved  too slow to be competitive, the 70cc bike was both reliable and competitive for its class. Brecon had never ridden a motorcycle before the races, let alone lined up on a grid to race. He acquitted himself well and completed all four races including the final where he placed 17th out of 20.

Over the two days of racing the bikes were also judged for design innovation and it was with considerable pride that Brecon took the National title for most innovative 70c Motard 2018. He designed the bike himself as part of his assessment work in class, using materials he was familiar with from his 2017 project. The bike sported a lightweight frame, hung motor and a horizontal rear shock. The finished outcome had heads turning from the time he arrived and it was a popular choice for the award.

Next year we will be building a sidecar and I would love to see other students aspire to build and attend the Nationals. Well done to Brecon on his success.
