Athletics | Gold Medal Performance!

Juliet Dunlop-Fraser —

Daniel and Sean Nicholson attended the Trans Tasman Athletics Competition in January representing New Zealand in the 11 Year Old Boys’ Team where they had 8 days of blistering heat and lots of fun in Campbelltown, NSW.

To keep things interesting they reversed their previous victories in the trials with Sean taking out the 1500m with a time of 4.44:5 and Daniel close behind in 4.44:8. In the 800m, Daniel was the winner in 2.24:0 and Sean only a second behind in 2.25:0.

They were also both selected to run in the 4 x 400m relay along with the two specialist 400m runners. Sean was chosen to run first and blitzed the field with his lap handing over the baton 30m ahead of the field. The team was overtaken on the 2nd lap but Daniel brought them back into contention handing over to the anchorman about 10m behind and the runner Tom Leon-Brown from Waitakere (who placed second in the 400m event earlier), brought them home to take the Gold.

Sean also competed in the High Jump and placed 5th and Daniel ran 6th in his 100m Heat plus 18th in the Long Jump. Coming home with 2 Gold Medals and 1 Silver Medal each was quite a phenomenal effort for these young champions.

Well done!
