Year 8 Technology

Hamish Carr —

The Year 8 students completed their puzzle unit of work late last term with some fantastic outcomes. I have devised a short unit looking at Brief Development.  We try to incorporate "product development" into each unit of work so in the last unit of work the students could experiment with different patterns within the constraints of the puzzle they were making, however, I find this limiting.

In an effort to encourage broader and deeper thinking about outcomes, classes have spent 6 lessons looking at how products are thought up and developed. We look at the impact on society and how decisions we make impact the present and future. With my classes we spent some time looking at innovative inventions, some science fiction that may predict the way humanity is heading and some cool New Zealand inventions.

We are now moving to some metal and plastic work.
