Juniors experience hands-on horticulture

Hilary Johnson —

Year 8 and 9 students helped out recently tidying and planting in our horticulture gardens.

Once seniors are on study leave, the 26 garden plots and the general garden area need to be cleared of weeds and either mulched and covered over or planted out with low maintenance crops that will easily survive the summer to be harvested in February. The enthusiastic junior volunteers planted out corn, onions and kumara, harvested broad beans, carted loads of weeds off to the compost and sampled the first of our strawberry crop.  It was great to see them have so much fun. Thanks so much to all who participated.
