Micaela Fleming wins Community Youth Spirit Award

Angela Macdonald —

On 15th August the Fleming family and Mr Harray attended the Trust Power Community Awards held at Comvita in Paengaroa. This was a night where Trust Power recognised community volunteers who have excelled in their field in the last year. Micaela Fleming was awarded the Community Youth Spirit award in recognition of the many hours she has committed in the last year to Waihi Beach Coastguard, Co-Arts Captain at Katikati College and as a Civilian Instructor at Sea Cadets in Tauranga.

Micaela is a Senior Radio Operator at Waihi Beach Coastguard where she has committed over 140 hours in the past year as sole charge radio operator in four hourly shifts over many weekends. This included being part of the radio crew for SARs trainings and managing mayday calls when they arise, being the crucial link point between the vessel in distress and coastguard boat crew.

Added to this she is a Civilian Instructor at Sea Cadets where she spends her Wednesday nights teaching day skippers, radio skills, drill and sailing to cadets between the ages of 13 to 17. Added to this she attends camps and helps plan events where possible.

Her role as Co-Arts Captain with Tyler Clark has seen her and Tyler organise and run this year's Talent Quest, Divas and Divos, Lip Sync, Community Concerts and a Drama event.

She is a busy young lady and willingly helps both in the school and the community whenever asked.

Congratulations on this great achievement Micaela!
