Katikati College Innovative Horticulture students showcase Science skills

Hilary Johnson —

NZKGI and Zespri recently provided an exciting opportunity for some of our students.

Three students, Peter Bigwood, Myah Mason and Rose Rayner, were given the opportunity to conduct a science project, spanning several weeks, relating to the relationship between fruit weight loss, dehydration and the appearance of shrivel.  They monitored 200 green and gold fruit, gathered and analysed data and made time lapse videos. Their experiment was part of a larger Zespri Innovation project. The results are very useful to the industry and the practical nature of the project was an opportunity for the students to showcase their Science skills in a kiwifruit context. The students were paid for their time and the College has received horticultural science equipment to the value of $1,150 sponsored by Start Afresh and Zespri Innovation.

Thank you so much to NZKGI, Start Afresh and Zespri!
